Entries are closing soon for City of Darwin’s 2025 Young Territory Author Awards (YTAA), with the deadline set for 27 August. Now in its 35th year, this Territory-wide annual writing competition invites aspiring young authors from across the Northern Territory to unleash their creativity and share their stories.
YTAA is one of the Northern Territory’s longest running and most cherished creative competitions, inviting all young people aged 18 and under to write, illustrate and submit their own original book. City of Darwin CEO Simone Saunders said the competition aims to nurture young imaginations and support literacy in the Northern Territory.
“City of Darwin is proud to support youth in developing a love of storytelling through the Young Territory Author Awards,” said Ms. Saunders.
“For 35 years, this competition has given children and young people across the NT the opportunity to express themselves creatively, build confidence in their writing, and share their unique voices. We encourage all young authors submit an entry before the deadline, you never know where one story could lead.”
Submissions are accepted from individuals and schools across the NT, with entries automatically considered across a wide range of prize categories, including:
- Young Territory Author of the Year – $500
- Runner-Up (Variety NT Award) – $250
- Best School Entry – $500 for the school
- CBCA NT WOW Award – $200
- Age Category and Regional Winners – Book vouchers up to $50
- Highly Commended and Encouragement Awards – Book vouchers up to $30
Entries close on 27 August 2025, with winners announced at a special presentation in Darwin in November.
Last year’s winners included Amy Devlin-Aylott with Casting Out, praised for its authenticity and emotional depth, and Milkwood Steiner School, which received the School Award for The World Outside the Hollow, a touching tale of habitat loss. The CBCA NT WOW Award went to James Cuff for his Anthology of Poetry, a joyful collection celebrating language and creativity.
Youth are encouraged to bring their creativity to life and submit their entry to be in the running for recognition, cash prizes and publication opportunities. All entries must be original work and submitted via your local public library, school, or online through the City of Darwin website.
