The upside to Darwin’s current hot and humid weather is this is an ideal time to be putting new plants in ground in your garden or the verge in front of your home.
And City of Darwin is offering gardeners a chance to get their hands on the types of greenery most likely to thrive in the current conditions … Top End native plants.
Tomorrow, City of Darwin will hold a native plant giveaway on the Nightcliff-Rapid Creek Foreshore near the Chapman Road carpark from 8am-11am.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis is urging people to get along early because he expects this to be a well-attended event.
“While there are 2000 plants to giveaway tomorrow, I’m tipping a big turn-out,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“We’ve got a mix of trees, shrubs, groundcovers and grasses to hand out.
“Given the time of year, I reckon people will just about to be able to hear the plants growing once they get them in the ground.”
Native plant giveaways are part of City of Darwin’s strategy to make the Territory’s capital a cooler, greener city.
Limits of six plant per household apply. Proof of Darwin residency must be provided.
