As we settle into the Dry Season, there is a real sense of energy across Darwin. Our parks, libraries, community centres and public spaces are coming alive with events, activities and opportunities that bring people together and showcase the best of our city.
What makes Darwin special is not just our lifestyle or climate, but the people who contribute their time, talent and passion to building a stronger community. From volunteers and community organisations to cultural leaders and local families, these are the people helping to create a city where everyone feels connected, supported and included.
Recently, City of Darwin announced the recipients of our latest Community Grants program, providing funding to a diverse range of local organisations delivering projects that strengthen community wellbeing, celebrate culture, encourage participation and create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds.
These grants are about more than financial support. They are an investment in local ideas and local leadership. They help local groups deliver initiatives that respond directly to the needs of our community, creating meaningful outcomes and strengthening the social fabric of our city.
We have also recently announced recipients of our NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Week grants, supporting community-led events that celebrate First Nations culture, history and achievements. These initiatives provide valuable opportunities for people to come together, learn from one another and continue building understanding and respect across our community.
As NAIDOC Week approaches, I encourage everyone to take part in the many events and activities planned throughout Darwin. Celebrating the world’s oldest continuing culture and recognising the contributions of First Nations peoples helps strengthen our community and enriches our shared future.
There are also plenty of opportunities for families and young people to get involved during the school holidays. City of Darwin’s free holiday program offers a range of creative, educational and recreational activities designed to keep young people engaged while providing accessible and affordable options for families. These programs help activate our community spaces and create opportunities for learning, connection and fun.
Our sense of community is reflected in the priorities outlined in City of Darwin’s recently endorsed 2026/27 Municipal Plan, which continues our focus on creating a connected, inclusive, liveable and resilient city through investment in community programs, public spaces, infrastructure and services that support residents now and into the future.
While City of Darwin plays an important role in delivering services and facilities, building a thriving city is a shared effort. It relies on the dedication of community organisations, volunteers, cultural groups, local businesses and residents who contribute to making Darwin the vibrant place we are proud to call home.
As we enjoy everything the Dry Season has to offer, I encourage everyone to get involved, support local events and take advantage of the many opportunities to connect with others. Together, we can continue building a strong, welcoming and resilient community for all.
