City of Darwin Libraries offer different membership options to suit your needs. Whether you're a resident, a visitor, or only need access to online resources, joining is quick, easy and always free.

- Full Membership

Get full access to all library services, including borrowing books and using our digital collections.
Who can join:
NT residents aged 16 and over. If you're under 16, a parent or guardian must take responsibility for the account and can sign up for you.
How to join:
Visit any library with:- NT Driver’s Licence showing your current address,
OR
- Photo ID (e.g. passport, Ochre card, Evidence of Age card) AND a document showing your NT address (e.g. lease, bank statement, utility bill, Centrelink or Health Care card).
You’ll receive your library card on the spot. It only takes a few minutes.

If you can’t visit one of our four libraries this membership gives Northern Territory residents access to online resources like eBooks, audiobooks, movies and digital magazines.
How to join:
Fill out the digital membership application form and we’ll email your digital library card within three business days.
Under 16? A parent or guardian must take responsibility for the account and complete the form for you.
To upgrade to full membership, just bring ID and proof of NT address to any library branch.
- Lite Membership

Designed for visitors or NT residents who don’t have photo ID or proof of address.
What you get:
Borrow up to 3 physical items at a time and access online resources. Membership is valid for 12 months.How to join:
Visit any library and bring some form of ID, like a bank card, Medicare card, employee ID, or Health Care card.
FAQ's
- Do I need to live in Darwin to join?

No. Anyone who lives anywhere in the Northern Territory can join for free. Visitors can join with a Lite Membership.
- What if I don’t have ID?

You can still join in person as a Lite Member. Just bring something that shows your name, like a Medicare card, bank card or work ID.
- Can children join the library?

Yes. Children under 16 can join with permission from a parent or guardian.
- How long does it take to join?

It only takes a few minutes if you visit the library in person with the right ID. If you apply online for a digital membership, we’ll email you within 3 business days.
What’s the difference between Full, Digital and Lite Membership?
Full: Borrow unlimited library items and use digital resources

Lite: Borrow up to 3 items and access digital resources
Digital: Use eBooks, audiobooks and other online resources. No borrowing of physical items.
- Can I upgrade my Digital or Lite membership later?

Yes. Just visit and library with photo ID and proof of your NT address to upgrade to Full membership.
- Does my membership expire?

Yes. Lite memberships expire after 1 year. Full and digital memberships expire after 5 years.

I forgot my password. Can I reset it?

Yes. You can reset your password at any time, if you know your library card number. Click here to reset your password, a password reset link will be sent to your registered email address.
- Can I renew an expired membership?

Yes. Just contact us to let us know you want your membership renewed and provide your up-to-date contact details.
- How do I cancel my membership?

Return all library items or pay outstanding invoices, then notify the library you would like to cancel your membership.
