In 2021, the Darwin Cenotaph Renewal Project was completed by the Darwin RSL Sub Branch through funding from the Australian Government. The construction of the eternal flame and forecourt required the removal of the civilian memorial walls and family plaques at the entrance of the Cenotaph.
City of Darwin has returned the memorial plaques and family plaques to an upgraded civilian memorial wall at the Darwin Cenotaph.
Location
- The new memorial wall is located close to the eternal flame, approximately 10 metres from where the previous civilian memorial walls were located (Attachment A Site Plan).
- There is a new concrete footpath connecting the new memorial wall to the eternal flame forecourt.
- As with the original civilian memorial walls, the plaques are facing the ocean.
Design
- The new memorial wall is made of steel, with all exposed steelwork finished in bronze.
- It is approximately 5.5 metres long, 0.4 metres wide and 0.9 metres high.
- It holds space for a total of 180 plaques, with 117 spaces already allocated for existing plaques. The order of the plaques are the same as originally placed, with plaque position no. 1 being located in the top left position, and so on. This leaves 63 vacant spaces for future family plaques.
-
The following wording is placed in the panel to the left of the plaques:
This memorial commemorates those families resident in Darwin whose lives were significantly affected by the Bombing of Darwin 19 February 1942 to 1945
- The rear of the new memorial wall has the words ‘WE HOLD THEIR MEMORY IN TRUST’ laser cut into a steel panel.
- Inside the wall is LED lighting, which illuminates both laser cut panels.
- Attachment B provides a 3D view of the new memorial wall.
