Chapel Lane Redevelopment
City of Darwin wishes to advise that works to revitalise Chapel Lane in the CBD will commence shortly.
The Chapel Lane Redevelopment will improve access to West Lane arcade, the Galleria and city retailers. It will create a laneway that encourages movement through the space, enhances the quality of the pedestrian experience and provides opportunity for improving economic outcomes for surrounding businesses due to increased activation of the space.
The redevelopment will include:
- creation of a pedestrian plaza by removing nine on-street carparks in Mitchell Street
- cooling the area and mitigating the urban heat island effect through planting more shade trees and installing permeable shade canopies
- replacing hard surfaces with soft landscape and providing openness that supports public safety and security by allowing passive and active (CCTV) surveillance
- adding lighting to enhance amenity and activation, including new illuminated gateway signage to Chapel Lane which doubles as wayfinding
- smart city infrastructure to provide free Wi-Fi, movement and environmental sensors, which will provide data for decision making and measuring outcomes
This project is funded by the Northern Territory Government as part of the Darwin City Deal. It aligns with the Darwin City Deal ‘Laneways and Small Streets Action Plan’.
