Chapel Lane Redevelopment - Darwin City
City of Darwin wishes to advise about the upcoming transformation of Chapel Lane in the CBD into a vibrant pedestrian plaza. This revitalisation project will include the redevelopment of the laneway and the adjacent carpark near Mitchell Street.
The initiative is designed to enhance connectivity to West Lane Arcade, The Galleria, and nearby businesses, creating a more inviting and accessible space for pedestrians. By activating this area, we aim to enrich the urban experience and support local economic growth through increased foot traffic and community engagement.
Northern Territory Government has funded this project as part of the Darwin City Deal which is a 10-year plan to position Darwin as a vibrant and liveable tropical capital city, supported by a growing population and diverse economy.
Construction Commencement
Work on the project will commence from Monday 8 September, with the project expected to be completed in December 2025, weather permitting. Traffic control measures will be in place throughout the project to ensure public safety.
To prioritise community safety and support the successful delivery of the Chapel Lane redevelopment, Bus Stop 179 on Mitchell Street will be temporarily relocated to Tamarind Park, from Saturday 6 September 2025. With the relocation of the bus stop, four car parks will be temporarily unavailable. This adjustment allows essential works to proceed while ensuring public transport services remain accessible.

Final Design
Extensive community and stakeholder engagement was undertaken to capture a range of views about the future use of the area. The outcome of this engagement is published at Chapel Lane Revitalisation | Engage Darwin
The revitalised area features:
- Creation of pedestrian plaza
- Cooling the area through planting more shade trees and installing shade
- Replacing hard surfaces with soft landscape and providing openness that supports public safety and security by allowing passive and active (CCTV) surveillance
- Adding pedestrian lighting, including potential new illuminated gateway signage to Chapel Lane which doubles as wayfinding
- Include smart city infrastructure to provide free Wi-Fi, movement and environmental sensors, which will provide data for decision making and for measuring outcomes.
- Nine car parks will be replaced with a pedestrian plaza including lighting and opportunities for alfresco dining and trees in line with the community’s desire to see a cooler, cleaner, greener area created.
