City of Darwin has installed a Cor Infinitus Memorial adjacent to the Darwin Oval Carpark on the Esplanade, honouring veterans and first responders who tragically lost their lives to suicide after serving our nation and community.
This peaceful, reflective space offers dignity, connection and comfort for families, friends, and mates affected by such loss, and supports broader efforts to reduce stigma around mental health and suicide.
Delivered in partnership with the Darwin Military and Civilian History Advisory Committee, the project was developed through consultation with local stakeholders and veterans’ groups. It was supported by City of Darwin’s Better Suburbs Program and funded in part by the Northern Territory Government’s Veterans Engagement and Support program.
Key features include a path, a shaded reflection bench, and a commemorative plinth with a Cor Infinitus Rosemery emblem and bearing the words:
“Dedicated to all those who served our nation and were overwhelmed by the battle within. Lest We Forget.”
It is located adjacent to the Wickam Point information centre close to the War Memorial at Cenotaph and the popular Federation walk foot path within the Esplanade.
City of Darwin CEO Simone Saunders said the memorial reinforces the city's commitment to honouring service and supporting mental wellbeing.
“This memorial is more than a physical place, it is a symbol of compassion, connection and courage,” Ms Saunders said.
“We are proud to stand alongside the families and communities affected by these silent losses and provide a space where healing and remembrance can occur.”
Cor Infinitus CEO Shane Fairweather said Darwin is now home to the 22nd memorial established across Australia.
“We are very grateful for the beautiful memorial established by the Northern Territory Government and the City of Darwin.
“This is a beautiful memorial in a perfect location that deeply reflects the Cor Infinitus Vision of supporting families bereaved by veteran suicide.”
The Cor Infinitus initiative is a national movement to install memorials across the country, creating safe, inclusive spaces that provide dignity and support to those impacted. Darwin now joins a growing list of communities participating in this powerful expression of respect and care.
