Agriculture Victoria have advised that from 7 February 2025 Microchip Pet Registry company, HomeSafeID, is no longer licenced under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 to keep and maintain an animal microchip registry service.
Now that the HomeSafe ID microchip registry has closed, if your pet’s microchip is registered with them, you need to transfer it to another database to ensure your pet remains traceable.
If your pet/s were microchipped by City of Darwin Rangers, their microchip will be registered with Central Animal Records and this will not affect you.
To check where your pet’s microchip is currently registered, pet owners can visit www.petaddress.com.au and enter your pet’s microchip number.
Why this matters
City of Darwin relies on up-to-date microchip information to reunite lost pets with their owners. If we find a lost dog that isn’t registered with us, we check microchip databases to locate the owner.
However, now that HomeSafe ID has shut down, any pets still registered with them no longer have accessible records—making it much harder to return them home.
If we cannot contact an owner within a legislated period of time, in some cases, unclaimed pets may face euthanasia. We don’t want this to happen, which is why we’re urging all pet owners to act now.
What you need to do
-
Check where your pet’s microchip is registered at www.petaddress.com.au.
-
If it’s with HomeSafe ID, transfer it to another database ASAP. Here are some options:
- Central Animal Records – www.car.com.au
- Australasian Animal Registry – www.aar.org.au
- Petsafe – www.petsafe.com.au
- Global Micro Animal Registry – www.globalmicro.com.au (Currently offering free registration for pets from HomeSafe ID—see the attached document for details.)
-
Make sure your pet is also registered with City of Darwin. This gives us immediate access to their microchip details and helps prove ownership if they go missing. For more info, visit here.
By updating your pet’s microchip details, you’re giving them the best chance of being reunited with you quickly if they get lost or picked up by a Ranger. Please act now to ensure your pet stays safe.
