Go Slow Beach Races

Same beach. Same spirit. Just done differently. Darwin's historic 1918 beach races are back - slower, cheekier and more Territory than ever!
More than 100 years ago, Darwin locals gathered on Mindil Beach for horse races, picnics and a moonlight concert, raising funds for soldiers returning home from the war. In 2027 that spirit returns with Go Slow Beach Races, a reimagining of one of the Territory's earliest and quirkiest social traditions.
Set against the iconic backdrop of Mindil Beach, forget everything you know about racing!
Expect six delightfully unpredictable beach races featuring retired racehorses and ponies with big personalities. Fun comes first, and taking things too seriously is strongly discouraged. With no whips, no prize money and no pressure, Go Slow celebrates horses for their personality over their performance.
Spend the day soaking up the vibes with a full day of live entertainment, food trucks, picnic packs and Fashions on the Sand. Part horse race, part picnic, part iconic event in the making.
Ticket entry includes an iconic sunset DJ set by The Potbelleez, known for their hit song “Don't Hold Back".
Choose General Admission for beach-level access (BYO shade and picnic setup), Licensed GA for shaded seating and priority bar access, or go VIP for a beachfront marquee, premium food and beverage packages and a horse meet-and-greet.
In keeping with the spirit of 1918, fundraising proceeds will go to the RSL Darwin, supporting NT veterans and their families.
