Disposing of Commercial Waste

Any waste that is produced from a business activity is considered to be commercial waste. This includes any home-based business loads that require transport via a commercial vehicle or truck.

Commercial operators have a number of options when disposing of your waste. How you do this will depend on the quantity and type of waste you are disposing.

Commercial Bin Collection

If you own and run a business in Darwin, you may find it more convenient to have your commercial waste collected from your premises.

Council does not provide collection services to businesses in the Darwin municipality, however there are a number of waste transport operators that do provide this service. Costs and services available do vary and we recommend that you contact these operators directly to find the right solution for your business.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

We understand that different businesses generate many types of waste, some of which are hazardous.

We are unable to provide disposal options for most types of commercial hazardous waste. Some forms of hazardous waste can be accepted at the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility with prior approval, this includes asbestos and contaminated soils.

  • Paint
  • Poison
  • Chemicals and acids
  • Organic
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Light Globes 
  • Contaminated materials.

There are a number of waste transporter operators in the Darwin region that provide business solutions for hazardous waste disposal. We suggest contacting these operators directly for advice and assistance to suit your business.

Disposal of End of Life Tyres at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility

As of 1 March 2021, City of Darwin will be moving to a particle size specification of no greater than 200mm² for the acceptance of shredded tyre material at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility. There will be no change to the disposal charges as identified below.

Disposal of End Of Life Tyres has two charges being applied:

  • Un-shredded Tyres $546.00 per tonne
  • Shredded Tyres $276.00 per tonne

This change will bring Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility into line with industry practice across Australia.

The 1 March 2021 date has been chosen to give Industry the opportunity to transition to this change.

Please be advised that post 1 March 2021, any partially shredded EOLT material greater than the 200mm² specification will be charged at the Un-shredded tyre disposal charge of $546.00 per tonne.

Shoal Bay EPA Licence

The Shoal Bay Landfill is effectively regulated by the NT EPA through a site licencing system. This site licence controls development and operational activities at the site, requires environmental monitoring activities to be undertaken and reported upon and requires overall compliance with a wide range of environmental and operational performance criteria.
