Resource Recovery Australia (RRA) is now open and was recently awarded the contract to run the shop.
RRA is a not-for-profit social enterprise that works in waste management to keep waste out of landfill, create jobs for people experiencing barriers to work and to engage and connect people in our communities.
Last financial year, Resource Recovery Australia helped divert over 11,965 tonnes of waste from landfill for reuse and recycling and employed 196 people to do this.
City of Darwin Acting Chief Executive Officer, Matt Grassmayr, said the shop will continue to be a great place to grab a bargain and divert materials away from landfill.
“As part of the new agreement with Resource Recovery Australia, the Trash and Treasure shop will be renamed Reviva Darwin when it re-opens on Saturday 8 February 2025,” Mr Grassmayr said.
“The shop will remain the first stop residents can visit prior to throwing their items away, to see if the items can be repurposed or resold to minimise the amount of waste entering landfill.
“I would like to thank the previous provider, Helping People Achieve (HPA), in establishing the Trash and Treasure Shop.
“Reviva Darwin will offer the community a fantastic opportunity to drop off items to be recycled, reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, and provide affordable and useful items for the community.
“Resource Recovery Australia remains committed to providing employment for HPA supported employees and locals,” he said.
As part of the changeover, the operating hours of the shop will change slightly. Please visit darwin.nt.gov.au/resident-services/waste-recycling/shoal-bay-waste-management-facility for additional information.
Donations can still be dropped off at the front of the shop during the shop closure period.
Items that are accepted at the shop include car batteries, bed bases and frames, household furniture, bicycles and scooters as well as kitchen utensils and crockery.
City of Darwin is committed to achieving social outcomes for local people and maximising opportunities to divert waste from landfill.
